ABOUT

M.A., Art History, University of Southern California

B.A., Art History, Lake Forest College

Based in Los Angeles, Jennifer Mary Wood is a visual artist whose work centers on the invention and depiction of constructed writing systems rendered through painting.  Her work presents a framework in which symbols correspond to language without revealing their linguistic referent, producing a tension between legibility and abstraction.  Trained as an art historian, she brings an awareness of aesthetic lineage and symbolic systems to her paintings, which grounds the conceptual basis of her practice.  Through this approach, her artwork positions language as a learned structure, inviting reflection on how meaning is encoded, perceived, and continually reconstituted.
